Shows and Events: This Month

This page changes almost daily, and new shows can appear in the middle of the page, because events are listed from the end of the month to the beginning.

Have a graffiti event to post here? Send FULL INFO IN PLAIN TEXT at least 2 weeks in advance (2 months is much better) and optional JPG flyers (do not send just the flyers, please!) to winsom@graffiti.org . We cannot guarantee posting of notices received only days before the show. Graffiti related events only!

Events that don't have definite endings, calls for participation, and new books are on the Ongoing event page.

Not Guilty: Case Dismissed

Unlike other videos that try to show you a little everything: bombing, productions, freights, subways, walls, gallery shows, interviews, Not Guilty focuses on one thing and only one thing, trains. This video is for the folks that love to see rolling steel that has been covered by beautiful masterpieces. The MILITIA crew that put this video out have spent a great deal of effort by scouring the corners of the earth (New York, Germany, Italy, Greece, Argentina, Portugal, Canada, Japan, China... is that enough?) for footage of painted trains. They succeed in showing running trains in service, trains getting buffed, trains getting painted, everything and anything to do with trains. The amazing part is that the work shown is all top quality, this isn't like your average train flick taken at night at some funny angle. The booming hip-hop soundtrack and limited, but insightful voiceovers make this one of the best graffiti videos put out to date. If nothing else, you should check this video out to see the Top 2 Bottoms running in New York City.

Available from our store.

Dixmont Time Capsule

This is a call to all artists living in (or able to travel to) the greater Pittsburgh area. Any artists interested in graffiti/mural work, or other any other kind of installation and site-specific work are encouraged to participate. This project centers on a space that I have recently acquired permission to work with. For those that are not familiar with the local history of Pittsburgh there is an area between Bellevue and Sewickley that is the old Dixmont State Mental Hospital. It was founded in 1859 and closed in 1984 - and is now almost certainly scheduled for demolition (to implant commerical-walmart-shlock). There are two primary areas: the main boiling complex up on the hill and the old power plant down on the boulevard (Rt 65).

Between the power plant and the main building is a 1/4+ mile long steam tunnel that runs pipes for heating. When the buildings would be demolished and the area is filled, the tunnel will be sealed off and buried away in the hillside. I am trying to find graffiti, mural, and other installation artists who are interested in putting work inside of this tunnel - essentially turning it into a time capsule. I'm hoping to primarily find local artists due to the historic nature of the space, but anyone who wishes to travel to the area to participate are more than welcome. I have secured permission to perform this project on the grounds, so those involved should be able to avoid legal concerns. Contact information is provided below for those wishing to participate and learn more.

Those interested in documenting the project may do so, and with enough people interested I may try to spin this to the local media (which they would eat up since it's Dixmont history); but that will largely be conditional on the wishes of those involved. It should also be noted that the space does contain some hazards which are capable of causing serious harm to those who may not be cautious while in the tunnel. However, the major dangers are limited to one area, and any participating artist who is careful of the one end of the tunnel which poses the threat should not be in any danger at any point while working.

Those painting murals/etc, or installing other works at the times that paint work is being done, will need to wear respirators due to the poor ventilation in the tunnel. A portable generator and industrial fan will be used, but it is not likely to be sufficient to avoid respirators entirely. I have found an inexpensive source of respirators and goggles for artists who don't have their own safety equipment. The total cost of this equipment is a max of $30 per person, and small grant money that I am currently looking into may be able to absorb this cost entirely.

Because of the dangers involved in the space the general public will not be able to visit the space at any time. An intimate viewing could likely be arranged for certain individuals and the press. The demolition work is scheduled to begin June 1, which will be the last day the property is in the control of the present owner. Any artists wishing to install work in the tunnel should plan to do so on Saturday, May 25th or Sunday, May 26th. These two days have been chosen for the safety of those involved as well as to discourage installed works from possible vandalism. Two separate days have also been chosen to allow artists not working with paint and other fumes to install their work on a separate day from those that will be working with paint, and therefore need respirators. All those working with paints will hopefully be able to do so on the 26th. These dates will also allow for one week of time in which to host media and other private viewings.

Participating artists will have to provide all of their own supplies. Small funds may be available from local arts initiatives, though it will be up to individuals to find their own sources of funding. The tunnel is approximately 6 1/2 ft tall, and 4+ ft from one wall to the steam pipes on the opposite wall. Please email or call for more precise information. There has been a bit of interest already from individuals and local organizations, however, there will be no lack of space to install work no matter how many people wish to become involved. Anyone interested in participating in this project should contact Zak (me) zak@dvdempire.com or call 724.625.0299 x234. Directions and other information will be given then.

In the development of my art I have come to realize that the certain concepts are capable of being explored on a scale that is beyond any individual's experience or lifetime, as their full impact is limited by that which impels social forces. To this end I have sought to investigate this concept through the creation of a time capsule whose life is longer than is reasonable to guess when it would next be discovered. In organizing this time capsule I intend to create an object that is of impacting significance, to the culture of today as well as that which would one day reopen it. On an individual level it will also stand as a developmental anchor for those that take part - to reference their own growth and movement. The region, however, will retain it as a keepsake; as the marker of a certain period in its development.

Lucky Bum Film Tour

Portland, Oregon based artists Vanessa Renwick and Bill Daniel are touring the western U.S. with a program of their experimental and documentary films and videos. Daniel will present "The Girl on the Train in the Moon", a hobo campfire/video installation that is a record of his investigation into the secret world of freight riding and hobo graffiti. Renwick will screen a 70 min. program of her work including films about folkart, hitchhiking, and rodeos. Her work explores the possibility of poetry in contemporary society, sometimes providing a vicious, satirical commentary on that society.

Hours: Wed. - Sun., 2-6p.m. and by appt.

Detritus connotes the jettisoned artifacts of a disbanded culture, and the title of our show therefore has a double meaning. Detritus is both the mission and foundation of our show, as well as the fact that the gallery is based in the Mission where many of the materials were reclaimed for art usage. From wooden pallets to old windows and house paint, the artists above see the inherent potential in these discarded objects. Coincidentally, the show largely features artists connected to the 'Mission School' as described in the wonderful recent Guardian article by Glen Helfand.

FR. 03.05.2002, 20.00 Uhr (till 26.05.2002) Vernissage Wladimir 518 at Galerie INTERDRUCK

"Collagen"

* Attention: Sticker exchange! April - July 1, 2002

"god bless graffiti"

In the upcoming summer months, begining in chicago and then in colombus ohio, there will be a project started where normal everyday newspaper dispensers on the street will be transformed into dispensers of pro-graffiti informaion. the dispensers will vend brochures which play with the language of buffsquad and graffiti blaster city fact sheets- things like "how to spot a vandal" and "10 steps to avoiding graffiti" and "stopping GRAFFITI 101". things like this are often dispersed by anti graffiti community groups and city streets and sanitation departments. the goal with this project is to make a brochure which seems similar and strange enough to look like one of those antigraffiti brochures but will infact encourage the art of graffiti appriciation, rethinking how space is used, and what peoples relationship to graffiti is.

*THIS IS IMPORTANT*

Included in the brochure will be a collection of hello my name is stickers. This is the begining of an oppertunity to get stickers up other places and have people pay attention to them that might usually walk past them. The brochure will encourage the person reading it to take the sticker and put it up. These stickers will also reach the hands of other writers in other citys who are interested in getting them up.

We want yous stickers! Please send us your standard sized "hello my name is stickers" ASAP. Tell other people! We are going to be doing this in several citys and are encouraging people from all over the world to participate in this exchange.
